FMS fuel shed Options

Just purchase this wounderfull plane and already completed a flight.My question is after entering fuel weight int the fms, what does a or n stand for? I cant find a reference to this anywhere.

Just to expand...

The alternate fuel burn is used with the auto selection for the center tank fuel pumps. The center tank pumps are turned off at 10000lbs and the wing or main tank then feed the engines until they have burned to around 4000 lbs a side. At that point the remainder of the center tank fuel is used.

This method of fuel burn was developed to reduce the chance of wing ice forming after landing.

The wing ice would form when the humid air at ground level is cooled when it come's in contact with the surface of the wing which is cooled by the fuel inside. By burning some of the main tank fuel early in the flight the fuel remaining in the main tank would not reach the cold temperatures required to form wing ice on landing.
